Lotería is the game every Mexican kid grows up with: a deck of illustrated cards, a caller, and the shout of ¡buena! when your tabla fills first. I designed Lotería Canadiense for AECAN in 2024, same game, swapped country. Every card trades a Mexican icon for a Canadian one, drawn in the same traditional chromolithograph style the original is famous for.
It was a hit for the association, and it traveled further than campus. We played it with the Canadian Consul in Monterrey and her team, who loved it so much we gifted them a full set, and it lives in the Canadian Consulate in Monterrey to this day. Under the fun, the point was simple: bridge Mexico and Canada, and teach one culture’s icons through the other’s most familiar game.
